How will you make an impact in this role?

American Express US Consumer Services (USCS) is responsible for our suite of consumer products, services, and experiences in the U.S., including our premium, cobrand, cash back, and lending portfolios, Membership Rewards, Global Travel & Lifestyle Services, the Centurion Lounge network, our Global Dining and Resy businesses, U.S. Consumer Banking, and best-in-class marketing programs across customer, prospect, and partner channels. The USCS team is focused on making membership an indisputable competitive advantage and helping each other become better leaders every day.

The objective of the USCS Control Management Governance and Change team is to establish the Operational Risk and Controls strategy for USCS, set up a foundational governance structure that ensures operational risks are identified, assessed, and managed in compliance with enterprise Operational Risk Management programs and reporting.

You will be joining a high priority and high visibility program management team that touches many teams within USCS and across American Express. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing program management support across deliverables and ensuring we seamlessly advance the business unit to an elevated risk management model. This individual will ensure the timely and structured management of the multi-year program for USCS. The role involves critical coordination across USCS workstreams, business unit leaders, and extensive collaboration with partners in second-line, third-line, and supporting areas to ensure we continue maintaining the highest levels of control and compliance standards.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Develop execution plans for operational risk management within the business unit (BU), including BU specific guidelines, project plans, etc.

  • Implement the operational risk framework to enable effective risk management and decision making in the BU

  • Create executive level reporting focused on identification of risks, risk mitigation strategy and risk drivers.

  • Facilitate the understanding and use of the risk governance framework across BUs through regular communication (e.g., Communities of Practice)

  • Aggregate reporting, approvals/exceptions and support "change-the-function" activities for the BU

  • Establish processes to ensure and monitor the integration of regulatory changes & updates into the Operational Risk framework and training materials

  • Be a key leader for sharing insights, better practices, themes, etc. across the enterprise

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated self-starter who is able to deliver strategic thought leadership and lead projects with limited guidance

  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, highly complex environment with a proven ability to quickly adjust to shifting priorities, multiple demands, ambiguity and rapid change

  • Proven track record of building relationships, successfully operating in a matrixed environment, and being able to lead and influence without direct authority

  • Proven track record of developing strategic frameworks for vaguely defined business problems and ability to turn those frameworks into actionable projects/initiatives that drive meaningful results

  • Strong thought leadership including ability to quickly understand critical linkages and implications of program strategies on the business at large

  • Excellent program management, written, and organizational skills

  • High level of integrity with ability to handle sensitive issues with complete confidentiality

  • Experienced people leader, growth mindset focused, with ability to manage, develop and motivate a diverse team of colleagues

  • Experience in Strategic Planning, Program Management, Project Management, Consulting, and/or Process Transformation supporting a large cross-functional, change-management initiative that supports multiple domains

  • Demonstrated control mindset, with preference of previous experience in operational risk and compliance at a Bank

  • Knowledge of commercial payments industry & economics advantageous

Qualifications

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $225,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
