How will you make an impact in this role?
The American Express Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C) team is a strategic function that works to enhance and protect the continued strength of the American Express brand through public relations, social media and content, colleague communications and corporate sustainability (CS).
The Social Media Director will lead American Express’ editorial-driven social media strategy, ensuring every post reflects the brand’s voice and values while engaging audiences through compelling storytelling. This role focuses on building and leading cross-functional partnerships with internal business units, driving innovation in how we communicate across owned social channels and aligning social content with broader enterprise needs.
Key Responsibilities
Cross-Functional Leadership & Partnership:
Work with the VP of Enterprise Content to create social strategy and serve as the primary liaison between Corporate Affairs & Communications and internal business units to amplify key initiatives and campaigns.
Partner with agencies and content creators to ensure social campaigns align with business priorities, cultural moments, compliance needs and enterprise narratives.
Facilitate regular touchpoints with business unit leaders to identify opportunities for integrated social media strategies and shared success metrics.
Build repeatable processes for scaling high performing content across audiences and channels.
Innovation :
Be at the forefront of industry insights and innovative approaches to social content, adapting these new ideas into scalable strategies for Amex business needs.
Build and mentor a high-performing team with a bias toward curiosity and accountability. Foster a culture where smart experimentation is encouraged, and learning is institutionalized.
Anticipate platform evolution and proactively pilot new strategies.
Advise and inspire the broader CA&C team, as well as teams across the enterprise, identifying new areas for collaboration and innovation aligned to business priorities.
Social Storytelling Excellence & Content Production:
Identify and craft social content that resonate with target audiences, focusing on relevance, authenticity, and engagement to highlight American Express’ unique point of view.
Define and implement an editorial calendar aligned with business priorities and cultural moments.
Ensure all social content adheres to brand tone and narrative structure, creating emotional connections with audiences.
Oversee ideation, production, and publishing of high-quality content across social platforms.
Lead creative teams on visual identity, video, and motion graphics to bring stories to life.
Monitor trends, analytics, and audience insights to optimize engagement and reach.
Experiment with emerging formats and platforms to keep American Express at the forefront of social storytelling.
Minimum Qualifications:
10 years in social media strategy or digital storytelling roles.
Proven ability to lead creative teams and manage complex content calendars at multiple different brands.
Strong understanding of social platform algorithms and best practices.
Exceptional writing and editing skills with a journalistic mindset.
Preferred Qualifications :
Demonstrated ability to quickly operate within established brand frameworks, governance structures, and complex organizational environments, within AMEX or similarly matrixed organizations.
Brand-side experience or agency experience supporting enterprise brands.
Expertise visual storytelling, including video and graphic design principles.
Experience operating within highly regulated or reputation-sensitive environments.
Experience balancing editorial excellence with performance and audience growth objectives.
Qualifications
Salary Range: $123,000.00 to $215,250.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
