The American Express Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C) team is a strategic function that works to enhance and protect the continued strength of the American Express brand through public relations, social media and content, colleague communications and corporate sustainability initiatives.
The Manager, Corporate Affairs & Communications is a key member of the Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability team within CA&C. Based in New York City, the Manager partners closely with the Vice President to advance American Express’ community impact narrative and strengthen the company’s leadership in social impact.
This role leads the development of a robust, enterprise-wide community impact media relations strategy, oversees the launch of new purpose-led programs, and ensures the integration of community impact messaging across major enterprise initiatives. The Manager will serve as the primary point of contact for multiple agency partners and play an expanded role in talent engagement, crisis/reputation management, and cross-functional coordination.
How will you make an impact in this role?
Strategic Community Impact Communications:
Lead a comprehensive community impact media relations strategy to elevate American Express’ reputation as a purpose-driven leader.
Identify and secure proactive storytelling moments across earned, owned, and social channels, positioning the company’s community impact efforts at the forefront of enterprise reputation building.
Program Leadership & Launches:
Drive communications strategy and coverage for the launch of three new flagship programs.
Continue to steward and expand legacy programs, including Backing Small and other multi-year community impact platforms.
Enterprise Integration:
- Embed community impact narratives into broader enterprise initiatives—ensuring Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability communications are integrated into programs such as Shop Small/SBS, B2B campaigns, and other corporate priorities.
Agency Leadership:
- Serve as the primary contact for four agency partners, overseeing direction-setting, alignment, tactical execution, and KPI management.
Talent & Influencer Engagement:
- Lead the selection, management, and contracting of talent and influencers for Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability media programs, in partnership with TLM and legal teams.
Issues & Reputation Management:
- Support sensitive and community-related reactive inquiries, providing thoughtful counsel and cross-functional partnership to protect and enhance brand reputation.
Internal Communications:
- Ownership of Give2Gether internal communications, ensuring colleagues are informed, inspired, and engaged in company-wide giving initiatives.
Executive Communications Support:
- Support the Vice President and senior leaders with messaging, talking points, speeches, and presentations tied to Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability priorities.
Minimum Qualifications:
A minimum of 7 years of communications or public relations experience with demonstrated success in purpose, community impact, and corporate reputation communications.
Strong media relations experience with proven ability to shape compelling, integrated narratives.
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and manage multiple agency partners.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to simplify complex topics into clear and compelling messages.
Strong executive presence and ability to counsel senior leaders with confidence.
Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail, organization, and collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with talent or influencers is a strong plus.
Experience supporting or navigating reputation management or sensitive issues is preferred.
PR agency experience is a plus.
Qualifications
Salary Range: $89,250.00 to $150,250.00 annually bonus benefits
