Job Description
AbbVie’s global Information Research (IR) group has a mission to unlock information that makes cures possible. Within IR, the Enterprise Knowledge Accelerator (EKA) team is the trusted knowledge partner for clients in R&D and the Corporate Business & Strategy Office (CBSO). EKA drives innovation and enhances knowledge-sharing across the value chain, for better and faster decisions that impact advancement in our pipeline. The team is a global organization, with presences at the Lake County, Illinois headquarters and Boston, Massachusetts areas (US), as well as the Ludwigshafen site (Germany). Leveraging cutting-edge technologies and scientific expertise, we deliver industry-leading capabilities to harness insights from published content for high-impact decision-making. Our team possesses the scientific and technical expertise to utilize and provide guidance on a wide range of knowledge sources, ensuring high-quality answers for our clients.
The Senior Data Scientist will join the Solutions for Published Insights and Client Enablement (SPICE) team, supporting AbbVie’s R&D, CBSO and other business functions enterprise wide. SPICE provides business partnership, resource consultancy, ad-hoc research support for business-critical questions, knowledge and insights mining and analysis, as well as designing and building innovative self-service solutions for insights generation from published resources and internal knowledge. This includes literature, patent, conference, news, clinical trial, and competitive intelligence data such as competitor pipelines.
As a Senior Data Scientist on the Solutions for Published Insights & Client Enablement (SPICE) team, you will serve as the lead data scientist focused on advancing AbbVie’s competitiveness by driving Therapeutic Modality Knowledge & Intelligence Solutions. You will lead the creation of new methods and algorithms for extracting, harmonizing and proactive monitoring of knowledge on emerging therapeutic approaches, critically evaluate new technologies and scientific advances, and integrate them into impactful business solutions, to set AbbVie up for future success in a competitive landscape. You will play a critical role in identifying and filling strategic knowledge gaps around emerging therapeutic modalities—including genetic medicines, innovative biotherapeutics, and RNA therapies—through the design and implementation of innovative GenAI-based and agentic knowledge solutions. Your leadership will enable AbbVie to leverage high-value insights extracted, harmonized, and integrated from literature, patents, news, and competitor intelligence. In this role, you will collaborate cross-functionally with other EKA/IR and business teams to develop and deploy AI-powered and data science solutions that support AbbVie’s pipeline strategy, corporate strategy, and R&D initiatives. The position requires a strong background in both science and technology, and the ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new scientific advances in therapeutic modalities and information technology (such as generative AI solutions and AI agents), given the dynamic and expanding landscape.
Responsibilities
Conceive, design, and implement advanced AI-powered published insights solutions (incl. agentic workflows) that address significant scientific and strategic trends and knowledge gaps in therapeutic modalities.
Develop and deliver innovative, high-quality intelligence solutions that systematically extract, analyze, summarize, integrate and proactively monitor key knowledge about novel therapeutic modalities (such as gene/cell therapies and innovative RNA or antibody-based drugs) to address urgent scientific and business needs.
Apply broad expertise in knowledge & information science, Generative AI/NLP, data warehousing, and software development to build robust data pipelines and analytical workflows for large and complex published (often unstructured) data, including literature publications, patents, news/press releases, and competitor pipelines.
Demonstrate deep knowledge of pharmaceutical R&D, drug development, and therapeutic modality trends
Operate with high autonomy and productivity, proactively tackling complex problems and driving multiple projects with minimal supervision.
Pursue and evaluate relevant external and internal leads in novel modalities, new technologies, and data sources—rapidly incorporating new findings into project strategies and generate novel, actionable insights for R&D and business strategy.
Collaborate cross-functionally with scientific, corporate strategy, and other R&D teams to ensure solutions meet real-world needs, fill knowledge gaps, and democratize access to key intelligence.
Mentor or supervise junior data & information scientists
Stay at the forefront of emerging trends, methodologies, and technologies that can advance therapeutic modality & competitor intelligence at Abbvie.
Author high-impact presentations and publications, communicating findings to diverse audiences.
Ensure adherence to AbbVie’s standards of compliance, data security, GxP, and code of conduct.
Achieve great results, while overwhelmingly demonstrating key AbbVie values and behaviors.
