This is a Manager Assistant (MA) role reporting to, and supporting, an Executive Vice President & Managing Counsel within the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) of American Express. This position will be based in New York. The mission of the GCO is to protect and strengthen American Express through world-class expertise and strategic advice that helps the Company’s various business units and corporate functions manage risk, identify opportunities and deliver on the Company’s promise of exceptional products and services.

The Manager Assistant will be a member of the EVP & Managing Counsel’s leadership team and will have responsibility for a broad range of activities, including team communications, executive-level presentations, and various initiatives to ensure business objectives are achieved. The MA will manage operational tasks to ensure all functions run smoothly and efficiently, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the team. The MA will work closely with the broader GCO team, key business partners and corporate functions, using outstanding stakeholder management, thought leadership, strategic thinking, communication, and organizational skills and will have a proven track record of excellence, operating independently and within a high performing, fast paced environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as key contributor and thought partner to the EVP & Managing Counsel and provide strategic support on a range of complex issues and projects as required.

  • Collaborate across the entire GCO to develop high quality presentations and talking points for key internal and external audiences on various topics, including executive preparation for meetings with the Chief Legal Officer, Deputy General Counsel, business unit executives and other key stakeholders.

  • Partner with the EVP & Managing Counsel on strategic initiatives; own and manage special projects.

  • Assist with organizing and facilitating leadership team meetings, staff meetings and department-wide roundtables - develop objectives, set the agenda and generate content.

  • Effectively interact with the EVP & Managing Counsel’s leadership team to identify, prioritize, and resolve issues.

  • Assist with oversight of team’s financials, manage detailed expenditure tracking, and prepare reports for the EVP with recommendations for addressing budgetary shortfalls and variances.

  • Engage closely with the Legal Operations team on GCO-wide technology initiatives, contract management projects and AI-initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with proficiency in business communication, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Significant experience in project management, with superior organization and planning skills and keen attention to detail.

  • Ability to effectively function in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, handling multiple tasks and taking on new responsibilities.

  • Strong integrity and excellent judgement required as well as the discretion necessary to handle confidential information.

  • Ability to thrive in a large, complex and matrix organizational structure.

  • Team player adaptable to a diverse group of colleagues, internal business clients, and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to identify and pursue strategic business objectives.

  • Ability to gain credibility, manage expectations, and develop strong working relationships with colleagues and business clients; convey clear advice to clients.

  • High energy, team-oriented, self-starter, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • This role is hybrid and required to be based out of the New York office.

Qualifications

Salary Range: $89,250.00 to $150,250.00 annually bonus benefits
