Job Description

The Head of Clinical Development for the JAPAC region is responsible for leading the clinical development strategy in Japan and China. This role requires a visionary leader adept at driving regional development efforts, while leveraging expertise in the unique regulatory and operational environments of Japan and China to foster innovation and excellence in clinical practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement the clinical development strategy for the JAPAC region in alignment with global strategies. This includes assessing regional needs and translating them into actionable plans that support overarching company goals.

  • Lead the clinical development teams in Japan and China, fostering collaboration and ensuring high-performance outcomes. This will involve regular engagement with team leaders to support and maintain a culture of excellence and accountability.

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify opportunities for clinical innovation and expanded market access in the JAPAC region. By maintaining strong relationships with partners and stakeholders, the VP will ensure the clinical programs are innovative and aligned with regional demands.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and global standards in clinical development. This requires staying current with changes in the regulatory landscape and implementing operational best practices.

  • Manage budgets and resources effectively to maximize clinical development outcomes.

  • Collaborate with key cross-functional partners to oversee the development, execution, and completion of clinical trials within the JAPAC region. The Head of Clinical Development - JAPAC will ensure that trials meet scientific and safety standards while advancing the company’s strategic objectives.

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to direct reports, enhancing team capabilities and performance.

  • Engage with regulatory bodies and strategic partners to advance clinical development initiatives.

  • Report regularly to senior leadership on progress, challenges, and strategic advancements. Clear communication of successes and barriers will help align regional goals with global corporate strategies.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in clinical trial methodologies and practices.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A minimum of 15 years of practical clinical development experience in the pharmaceutical industry, including experience in Clinical Development across multiple therapeutic areas.

  • Proven experience in leading large functions.

  • Medical Degree preferred.

  • Broad knowledge of drug development, clinical operations, and on-market medical affairs.

  • Demonstrated high-level of competency in the AbbVie leadership behaviors, especially within the JAPAC region.

Preferred:

  • Big picture and strategic thinker with the ability to formulate a vision of the future state and lead the organization in building tactical plans to achieve this.

  • Excellent collaborator who easily builds relationships and gains cross-functional alignment.

  • Strong business and financial aptitude with high analytical skills, using data to drive business decisions and continuous improvements.

  • Articulate communicator with executive presence

Key Stakeholders:

Heads of Development in China and Japan, Global Clinical Development Teams, JAPAC Regional Leadership, Regulatory Bodies, Strategic Partners.

Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
