About the Internal Audit Group at American Express

Our Internal Audit Group is a worldwide function with 300 team members and offices across nine countries within American Express. Our mission is to protect and enhance organizational value by providing independent, objective, risk-based assurance, advisory services and to influence the way the company manages risk.

We are committed to growing our audit staff significantly as we continue to expand and enhance the Internal Audit Group. Our assurance and risk professionals have diverse backgrounds including internal controls, consumer compliance, technology, operational risk, financial accounting, data analytics, and banking operations. Our audit teams align to key risk areas and business units to ensure IAG can provide comprehensive and risk-based audit coverage. In addition, IAG has a Professional Practices group responsible for managing audit operations, quality, and standards; regulatory relations; reporting; training and professional development; and key internal capabilities and technologies.

How will you make an impact?

The Director – Quality Assurance & Improvement Program (QAIP) leads the QAIP team, oversees the planning, execution and reporting of quality assurance (QA) reviews and initiatives, and helps grow and develop the QAIP team to provide strong credible challenge over audit execution and operational processes to build strong credibility and influence across the department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee teams of professionals to execute multiple QA projects / reviews at once, ensure alignment with professional and department standards, budget, and deadlines using a flexible resourcing strategy that optimizes the use of highly qualified professional staff

  • Plan QA projects / reviews, define objectives and scope, and coordinate with control groups to ensure effective execution; conduct L2 reviews throughout the review in alignment with methodology

  • Support the development of the annual QA plan

  • Provide clear direction and oversight of review activities during planning, execution, and reporting phases to ensure quality and timely delivery

  • Champion continuous improvement by monitoring industry trends, regulatory developments, and best practices in auditing and banking, and incorporate these insights by identifying and recommending IAG methodology, practices, and team ways of working

  • Leverage strong risk management knowledge to assess relevance of findings, potential exposures, materiality and demonstrate awareness of big picture issues, identify thematic findings and present findings as well as recommendations to senior IAG leadership to enhance IAG processes to align with industry standards

  • Develops and maintains mutually beneficial working relationships with senior management of assigned IAG processes

  • Work with Manager / Senior Manager to conduct post- review feedback discussions with team members to provide actional feedback, support development, and recognize accomplishments; leverage feedback results to implement process improvements into future reviews

  • Recruit, supervise, coach, mentor, and develop staff to build high-performing teams, fostering continuous learning and professional growth

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8 years of audit experience

  • Prior experience working at a Big Four / G-SIB

  • Has strong written and verbal communication skills that deliver high quality, actionable and value-added feedback to management on potential issues and potential solutions to close gaps

  • Effectively oversees multiple audits, projects and portfolio, setting direction, and developing team capabilities

  • Guides the team in applying critical thinking to evaluate potential risks and how to translate these considerations into evidence and risk based insights

  • Guides team in applying control theory and professional auditing practices across the full audit lifecycle, including design and evaluation of control frameworks

  • Stays abreast and cascades in-depth knowledge of current trends, new developments, regulations, technologies, and best practices in the auditing profession, banking industry, and area of specialization to teams, peers, and leaders

  • Proven ability to lead teams and manage multiple projects and provide quality review across deliverables

  • Strong knowledge and appreciation of IA standards, regulatory, and financial industry guidance and best practices relevant to Internal Audit required

  • Understanding of regulatory, accounting, and financial industry guidance and best practices relevant to the business, including technology and data implications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with data analytic tools, data visualization, key risk indicators (KRIs), key performance indicators (KPIs), information systems / technology, and scorecards / dashboards, etc.

  • Interest in working with data, interpreting results, analytic best practices and experience with data analytics tools and data visualization

  • Professional certification: CPA, CIA, CISA or other relevant industry certification

  • Direct experience in quality assurance reviews related to Internal Audit

  • Experience in auditing: Enterprise Risk Management, AML, Regulatory Compliance, Finance, Capital Planning, and Financial Crimes

Qualifications

Salary Range: $123,000.00 to $215,250.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
