Job Description
Discovery Biotherapeutics at AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated Principal Research Scientist to lead a dynamic team supporting biologics drug discovery and engineering. The candidate will leverage expertise to develop and implement research plans for antibody identification/optimization supporting all AbbVie’s therapeutic areas. The ideal candidate should have extensive experience with in vitro display technologies for therapeutic discovery and engineering, a proven track record generating novel synthetic libraries, and project leadership to advance early- and late-stage discovery programs. They should possess excellent communication skills, be comfortable presenting in group settings, and having experience managing teams of 4 or more scientists. The applicant should be an enthusiastic creative scientist who will make tangible contributions to the continuous improvement and innovation within the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead a team applying in vitro display technologies for biotherapeutics discovery and engineering to support all AbbVie therapeutic areas
Implement novel selection strategies and build industry-leading libraries for discovery and screening of therapeutic candidates
Identify and solve technical problems independently, conceive and implement innovative research ideas
Evaluate and integrate state-of-the-art technology to improve therapeutic discovery platforms, and demonstrate creative “out-of-the-box” thinking to solve difficult problems
Ensure consistency and quality of technical reports from employees supervised
Lead one or more teams, and influence areas in own discipline within department
Provide project updates, analyses and advice to cross-functional teams and senior management
Present original work internally across departments and at internal and external scientific conferences; may author or co-author peer-reviewed scientific papers or patents
Supervise a team of 5+ scientists, evaluate team performance, and is accountable for the effective performance of team
Act as subject matter expert, support and contribute to implementing and improving current workflows
Ability to engage internal and external scientific leaders in collaborative research
Serve as a biologics lead for cross-functional teams, and contribute scientific insights into multiple projects across various therapeutic areas; recognized and sought out as an expert in discovery and engineering of therapeutic molecules
Qualifications
PhD, MS, or BS degree in Biochemistry, Biochemical engineering or related disciplines with typically 6+ (PhD), 12+ (MS), or 14+ (BS) years of experience in in vitro display technologies and applications to discover and engineer therapeutic proteins
Sound scientific understanding of current state of in vitro antibody discovery
Experience leading a team in discovery and/or engineering of diverse protein therapeutic formats
Deep understanding of antibody structure and function
Extensive experience and up-to-date knowledge in antibody engineering and optimization (e.g., humanization, Fc optimization) best practices
Ability to explore and develop new approaches to further advance innovative in vitro discovery and screening technologies
Background in biophysical and structural characterization of antibodies, fragments, and other binding domains
Extensive experience in design and construction of novel antibody, fragment, and mimetic libraries
Experience with bacterial toxin structure-function, stability, preferred
Experience in display of complex proteins [non-antibody-like] preferred
Experience with viral antigens and vaccine design, preferred
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Team player with the ability to operate in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary environment
Adapt to rapid changes in project priorities and timelines
Recognized in the scientific community through a sustained record of peer-reviewed publications and patents preferred
Candidate must be a goal-oriented team player with excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong can-do attitude and experience in leading or managing teams

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. Salary: $121,000 - $230,000
