Job Description

Our Global Financial Crimes team is excited to announce an opportunity for a Manager & Counsel within the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) at American Express. The Manager & Counsel will report to a Director & Counsel in the Global Financial Crimes Team based in the United States.

Global Financial Crimes is a team of subject matter experts, plugged into industry developments and emerging issues in financial crimes risk management. This team advises all American Express business units across the global enterprise. The U.S. team supports our U.S. business and our lawyers form collaborative relationships with our partners in the GCO, Compliance, Risk, Audit, Government Affairs, and Regulatory Relations, among others. We support industry engagement on key points of financial crimes policy and regulation development. From time to time, the team also supports teams in GCO who manage investigations and enforcement matters to supply subject matter expertise. This is a dynamic unit of experts who collaborate across teams to support the American Express enterprise and U.S. business.

The Manager & Counsel is responsible for providing practical, timely, strategic, and high-quality legal advice on U.S. financial crimes laws, with a focus on anti-money laundering regulations and anti-corruption laws, across a broad range of matters that impact our U.S. business. You will be the primary point of contact for several of our key clients, especially in Global Financial Crimes Compliance. You will work across the organization to assist diverse teams to understand financial crimes legal requirements and regulatory expectations as announced through enforcement, guidance, and industry interactions.

Responsibilities

How will you make an impact in this role?

  • Advise financial crimes compliance teams on AML legal requirements and regulatory expectations.

  • Support new product launches and assessments for money laundering and financial crimes legal risk.

  • Draft and negotiate financial crimes terms, representations, and undertakings in commercial agreements.

  • Monitor regulatory releases and enforcement actions to identify trends that can impact the financial services industry and/or American Express business.

  • Participate in industry meetings and support advocacy efforts on the development of financial crime regulations and industry best practices.

  • Provide legal support for regulatory change management projects.

  • Support financial crimes training and awareness and briefings across the organization.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Qualified to practice law in the U.S.

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant financial crimes or investigative experience at a law firm, in-house, and/or government agency.

  • Excellent knowledge of U.S. financial crimes laws including anti-money laundering regulations applicable to banks, money services businesses, and other financial institutions.

  • Strong drafting, analytical, and negotiation skills and the ability to provide clear, precise, and pragmatic advice.

  • A team player with great stakeholder management skills who can effectively collaborate and build relationships with lawyers and business clients throughout the organization.

  • Ability to work with a high degree of autotomy and re-prioritize workload as new projects and matters arise.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Strong commercial acumen and solutions-oriented mindset.

  • Willingness and flexibility to take on new responsibilities as American Express and its businesses continue to evolve.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience advising financial institutions, fintechs, and/or payment services institutions.

  • Experience advising U.S. headquartered, multinational institutions, balancing U.S. laws and enterprise frameworks that can apply across multiple jurisdictions.

  • Familiarity with business and products across the banking/financial services industry and relevant legal issues affecting them.
