The General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) at American Express is where great legal minds influence global business strategy. The GCO mission is to protect and strengthen American Express through legal expertise and strategic advice that helps business partners manage risk, identify opportunities, and deliver on the company’s promise of exceptional products and services.

Operations

The General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) Operations team integrates operational expertise with business acumen to streamline processes and support diverse practice groups within the GCO. By focusing on risk management, financial management, learning and communications, process optimization, technology and innovation, and several other key areas, this team ensures that the GCO operates efficiently and effectively. As the backbone of the GCO, our support spans strategic advice, legal service delivery, project management and significantly contributes to the GCO’s strategy enabling it to support the broader organization.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of 5 Product Owners and Managers, setting the strategic roadmap for legal technology and data initiatives

  • Define and deliver the global legal tech, and GenAI strategy, driving responsible adoption of AI to improve productivity and legal service delivery

  • Partner with Legal, Tech, and Risk teams to unlock value from legal data, developing dashboards, insights, and analytics that improve service delivery, operational efficiency, and stakeholder experience

  • Working with our legal professionals to identify, evaluate, and implement legal technology solutions, including AI, CLM, workflow automation, and knowledge management tools

  • Lead digital transformation and automation initiatives to simplify legal processes and reduce risk

  • Oversee the legal technology budget to ensure dedicated engineering teams are focused on the highest-value priorities to and optimizing the technology estate for the organization.

  • Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and renewals

  • Ensure strong data governance, system integration, and alignment with enterprise IT and security standards

  • Drive change management and adoption, ensuring new tools deliver measurable value

  • Act as a bridge between Legal, IT, and the business to align priorities and execution

  • Foster a culture of innovation, transparency, and continuous improvement, encouraging teams to embrace new ways of working and provide feedback

  • Lead with openness, clear communication, and accountability to support fast decision-making and strong partnerships

  • Build high-performing teams through coaching, trust, and a focus on personal growth and resilience

  • Embrace Agile principles and encourage teams to reflect, learn, and continuously improve delivery

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 7 years experience leading legal technology and product initiatives , including process redesign, product strategy, and delivery within Legal teams

  • Proven ability to define and execute product and platform roadmaps , delivering both incremental improvements and large-scale transformation

  • Hands-on experience implementing AI and GenAI tools within legal teams (e.g. copilots, contract analytics, legal research AI)

  • Understanding AI risk, data privacy, and responsible-use frameworks

  • Driving productivity, automation, and improved legal service delivery

  • Strong communicator who builds trusted relationships across Legal and partner teams, and leads adoption of new ways of working

  • Curious, creative problem-solver with a proactive mindset, comfortable navigating complex, matrixed organisations

  • Experience leading people and delivering end-to-end CLM, process automation , and core legal technologies (e.g. CLM, e-billing, matter management, workflow)

Qualifications

Salary Range: $123,000.00 to $215,250.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
