As a Materials Engineer, you will take responsibility for cross-disciplinary product and material investigations involving internal and external partners. Description

You will collaborate with design, manufacturing, and reliability partners to analyze failures in materials, components, and systems using advanced analytical techniques and tools. Your expertise in materials science, mechanical, electrical, and polymer mechanics will be essential in identifying root causes and driving corrective actions to enable key product features, performance, and reliability.

  • Conduct failure analysis on materials, modules, and systems to investigate root cause
  • Work cross-functionally with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Utilize advanced equipment and techniques to provide key material-level insights for new product development (SEM, FIB, TEM, CT, FTIR, etc.)
  • Document findings, compile reports, and present summaries to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Monitor project progress and performance, ensuring alignment with goals and adjusting as necessary
  • Develop strong links to the team of internal lab engineers, partner teams in other company functions and key external vendors
  • Apply best-in-class project management methodologies on all projects
  • Implement an effective communication strategy to ensure that all project partners are kept fully informed on project progress
  • Ensure that projects are well scoped, utilize appropriate resources and apply well-costed solutions
  • Provide succinct and accurate updates
  • Flexibility to coordinate with global teams across multiple time zones

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or a related engineering field with 3+ years industry experience.

  • Experience with failure analysis techniques and investigative methodologies

  • Understanding of material characterization techniques (e.g. X-ray CT, SEM, FTIR, XPS, AFM, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or related engineering field

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a failure analysis or material development role supporting emerging materials and technologies with a diverse array of projects and timelines.

  • Experience with a variety of materials characterization techniques (e.g., X-ray CT, SEM, FTIR, XPS, AFM, etc)

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to collaborate with different teams including engineering, operations, business functions and external vendors, using influencing skills to drive decisions and meet deadlines

  • Analytical thinker who is data driven, with a can-do attitude and flexibility to accommodate evolving business needs

  • Strong problem resolution, problem solving, and presentation skills

  • Ability to articulate complex business and technical situations to a variety of audiences

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $175,800 and $312,200, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
