About the Role: Manager, Communications: Global Merchant & Network Services
The American Express Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C) team is a strategic function that works to enhance and protect the continued strength of the American Express brand through public relations, social media, colleague communications, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
This NYC-based position will be an integral member of the American Express Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) division. GMNS is responsible for relationships with Amex-accepting businesses, as well as third party payment providers, strategic bank and fintech partners, prepaid products, and the company’s global payments network.
This role specifically focuses on externally communicating the value of American Express merchant membership, as American Express provides the powerful backing to help businesses run, grow, and protect their businesses. American Express continues to deepen engagement with merchants, expand the number of global locations that accept Amex, and enhance our network to provide a modernized payments experience for businesses and Card Members.
The manager will work with various members across the American Express enterprise to tell the merchant membership story. This role reports to the Director, Communications, GMNS.
How will you make an impact in this role?
Support Global Merchant Services (GMS) and B2B business goals with compelling strategies that include communications programs and content campaigns to articulate the value American Express provides to merchants
Collaborate closely with internal colleagues within key industry engagement groups to assess external thought leadership opportunities and speaking engagements.
Lead PR agency and support ongoing media relationship efforts to promote GMS advancements and executive perspectives.
Deploy executive visibility strategies for senior business leaders within GMS through earned/owned media coverage, speaking engagements and social channels.

Create and execute influencer campaigns on Amex and third-party social media channels, spotlighting business owners and their stories.
Support issues preparedness/management from end-to-end with senior oversight, working with colleagues across GMS to draft reactive messaging, counsel on communications strategy, and field incoming media requests.
Monitor competitor and broader industry news and activities, including advancements in payments technology, infrastructure, and regulation, contextualizing news to senior business leaders as relevant.
Lead and compile weekly, monthly and quarterly reporting documents to showcase communications results and highlights to key stakeholders across the business.
Minimum Qualifications
5 years of public relations/communications experience, with proven ability to:
Inform and support communications strategies across a mix of channels (earned, social, owned, paid), with an eye on the evolving media and digital landscape.
Understand what makes a story, and the necessary storytelling elements to drive earned media coverage; includes superior written, verbal and media relations skills, with media relations results.
Communicate with and counsel executives with a high level of professionalism, as well as build relationships with internal key stakeholders (business leaders, marketing teams, legal teams, etc.) to drive storytelling while also mitigate risk.
Familiarity with brand reputation and crisis comms/issues management, including scenario planning, development of reactive messaging, management of media inquiries and monitoring.
Be a strong self-starter, collaborator, and project manager, handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced work environment; ability to work both independently and as an adaptable team player; ability to think independently, quickly, and apply good judgment; ability to lead projects from end-to-end; strong attention to detail.
Ability to adhere to policies and deadlines, and deal with confidential information without exception.
Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualification
Experience is managing PR agencies and/or teams; agency experience is a plus
Experience in storytelling for payments/financial services/organizations supporting small businesses
Experience translating technical subject matter into easy-to-understand communications messages

Salary Range: $80,000.00 to $155,000.00 annually bonus benefits
