Job Description
The Structural Biology Group at AbbVie Headquarters in Lake County, Illinois, is seeking a highly motivated scientist with extensive infrastructure experience and people leadership skills to join our Structure-Based Drug Discovery (SBDD) team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in SBDD using X-ray crystallography, Cryo-EM, and SAXS, along with a passion for building infrastructure in an industrial pharmaceutical environment. The successful candidate will work with and lead a centralized multidisciplinary Structural Biology team that supports global Discovery Research across AbbVie's portfolio. In addition to driving SBDD, this candidate will play a key role in shaping the group's scientific infrastructure by ensuring technology integration and expansion and developing data management systems to accelerate drug discovery.
Key Responsibilities:
Determine X-ray crystal structures of protein-ligand complexes in high-throughput mode to aid medicinal chemistry design and partner with biologists, molecular modelers, and medicinal chemists to drive SBDD.
Advance infrastructure initiatives to enhance structural biology workflows, improve data management, and increase cross-functional accessibility to improve efficiency and scientific impact. Design and implement robust, scalable systems for automated data analysis.
Stay at the forefront of structural biology technologies, bringing in novel capabilities that enhance the scientific infrastructure and enable innovation at AbbVie.
Provide hands-on and strategic leadership in Cryo-EM and SAXS applications to support diverse drug discovery programs.
Lead and mentor a team of high-performing scientists in areas of protein crystallization, X-ray crystallography, Cryo-EM, SAXS, and infrastructure development.
Aid construct design efforts for structural biology efforts.
Utilize cheminformatics tools and manipulate scripts for use across mixed computing platforms.
Maintain accurate and timely records of experimental results.
Communicate results and interpretative analysis through high-impact presentations and reports to internal stakeholders and at external scientific forums. Publish in peer-reviewed journals as appropriate.
Critically evaluate scientific literature and adopt novel technologies that facilitate structure-based drug discovery at AbbVie.
Qualifications
PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related field.
12+ years of structural biology experience, with a requirement for industry experience.
Deep expertise in protein crystallization and structure determination and analysis using X-ray and Cryo-EM.
Familiarity with structure-based drug design strategies.
Demonstrated experience in strategizing, executing, and managing scientific infrastructure.
Proficiency in programming and scripting skills with the ability to work across various computing environments.
Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Proven ability to work independently as well as part of a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary team.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt quickly to evolving priorities in a fast-paced environment.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.?
