As part of Team Amex, you'll experience this powerful backing with comprehensive support for your holistic well-being and many opportunities to learn new skills, develop as a leader, and grow your career.

Here, your voice and ideas matter, your work makes an impact, and together, you will help us define the future of American Express.

We’re looking for a Senior Programmer to join our dynamic engineering team and help design and build next-generation applications supporting data center infrastructure, automation, and large-scale application migrations. You’ll work with cutting-edge technologies, contribute to critical initiatives, and play a key role in our digital transformation journey.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Application Development: Design, build, and enhance new applications to support infrastructure buildouts and application migrations to next-generation data centers.

  • Code & Automation: Write clean, efficient, and testable code using modern languages and frameworks. Develop automated test cases and use APIs and CI/CD pipelines to maintain resilience, performance, and availability.

  • Technology Innovation: Identify and evaluate new technologies, tools, and frameworks that can enhance performance, scalability, and developer productivity.

  • Optimization & Toil Reduction: Continuously improve systems and processes to eliminate manual work, increase efficiency, and reduce operational overhead.

  • Monitoring & Insights: Build monitoring and analytics dashboards using Splunk, Grafana, and Kibana to provide visibility into application and system health.

  • Issue Resolution: Review incidents and partner with engineering teams to identify root causes, fix code, and deploy production-ready solutions quickly and safely.

  • Compliance & Quality: Develop applications that meet rigorous compliance, security, and audit requirements within a financial services environment.

  • Collaboration & Reviews: Participate in peer reviews, provide constructive feedback, and ensure adherence to best practices and design standards.

  • Testing & Validation: Define and execute test conditions based on specifications, ensuring code quality, scalability, and maintainability.

What You Bring

  • A passion for building scalable, high-performance systems using modern technologies.

  • Strong experience in backend programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, C#, or Scala.

  • Experience with Node.js and CSS frameworks such as Tailwind CSS, Bootstrap, or similar.

  • Deep understanding of microservices architecture, RESTful APIs, and asynchronous, low-latency system design.

  • Familiarity with DevOps concepts, CI/CD pipelines, and version control systems like Git.

  • Experience with incident management systems (ServiceNow preferred).

  • Working knowledge of Unix/Linux environments and at least one modern programming language (Java, Go, or a UI framework).

  • Hands-on experience with distributed systems, relational databases, and algorithms.

  • Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with Agile development practices and rapid release cycles.

  • Basic understanding of infrastructure components (networking, compute, and storage) and their role in application performance.

Key Attributes

  • Technically curious and eager to explore emerging technologies.

  • Strong collaborator who values teamwork and open communication.

  • Balances innovation with reliability and well-defined service level objectives (SLOs).

  • Thrives under pressure and can lead teams through critical requests.

  • Resourceful, self-driven, and solution-oriented — with a proactive mindset.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical ideas into clear business context

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical discipline (advanced degree preferred).

  • 6 years of relevant industry experience in software development, infrastructure programming, or systems engineering.
